This is good advice. My own experience is that most people are uncomfortable when asked "Are you hiring", even if you are speaking to the CEO. Like any good salesman, you need to first identify a need or a point of dissatisfaction that your prosective employer has, then through conversation, indirectly, show how you are able to fill that need. If no such opportunity exists, then at least you can make a networking contact that may lead you to others who have similar interests and needs.

A real thing! Motivated well informed and proactive. And better not expect anything back, sometimes it comes from completely unexpected side, but being proactive and offering help always pays back!

Very good example. This is how networking should be done. Both you and I feel that networking isn't about getting a job. It's about helping someone else. They will help back!

Keep up the great work!

This is brilliant! I love how it captures attention by being helpful, not needy.

Brilliant coaching and advice! Christine's strategic approach to building a relationship rather than executing a transaction is exactly the right way to go. It is timelessly excellent guidance. Dale Carnegie could have used your scenario in his 1936 classic "How to Win Friends and Influence People"!
