I am a living breathing example of why not to depend on a job board and why they are ‘a black hole’ as mentioned. I applied for a job with a company that shall remain nameless. I used my standard resume and a tailored cover letter. Off it went and nothing more was heard over 3 weeks. Weeks later I got an email from their HR recruiter that she saw my LinkedIn profile and that I looked like a great fit for their opening. She also asked for my resume. I sent my same standard resume and she said it looked perfect and wanted am immediate phone interview. I mentioned to her after a few minutes that I applied online. She said she didn’t recall my name so I looked for the confirmation. I found it and discovered that it was a canned response message sent FROM HER MAILBOX. It seems that the online process didn’t have a significantly high enough number of boolean matches to percolate up to where human eyes could review it. This was the same resume she liked when I emailed it! All this is proof positive about what Kevin and Aaron were speaking about. You need to bypass online options where possible and find the hiring managers so you can speak to them directly. Social media, networking contacts and such are the keys to the kingdom.
